Braves lose yet another critical piece to injury amid season from hell

MLB: APR 27 Guardians at Braves

Coming off the worst loss of the season, one in which the Braves blew a six-run lead in the 8th inning, Atlanta is dealt yet another blow.

The club announced that they’ve recalled Dylan Lee to Atlanta in a corresponding move after placing AJ Minter on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation.

At different points, the Braves have been without Ronald Acuna Jr., Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies, Sean Murphy, Austin Riley, Max Fried, Reynaldo Lopez, Peirce Johnson, and AJ Minter. That’s nine All-Star caliber players that have spent time on the injured list for Atlanta.

Minter has spent time on the IL already this season with the same hip inflammation issue. He hasn’t been as effective this year, and the hip could be the underlying reason for that. His fastball velocity has dropped, but the Braves should be able to survive his absence for a couple of weeks.

The Braves bullpen is deep; however, Luke Jackson remaining on the roster despite owning a 9.53 ERA and 2.471 WHIP in just 5.2 innings is a bit egregious. With Minter now out, they might need him, but Jackson never should have been rostered over Dylan Lee, who has been mostly effective this season.

Nevertheless, the bullpen alone isn’t the reason the Braves can’t build any momentum. For most of the season, it’s been the offense. Still, when the lineup does its job, lately it’s been the pitching staff that hasn’t held up its end of the bargain.

Something has to change for the Braves to make the playoffs, a task that just got much more challenging with A.J. Minter hitting the IL.
