When Sean Murphy was drilled with a fastball and ruled out for 4-6 weeks with cracked ribs, Braves fans collectively sighed, believing the injury bug had followed the club from last year. That tension grew when Jurickson Profar suffered a wrist injury diving for a ball in the outfield.
It felt like Murphy’s Law with the Braves. What could go wrong will go wrong in Atlanta. Of course Profar, the only notable offseason acquisition, would suffer an injury before Opening Day. It looked bad, like he could’ve broken his wrist, which would’ve put his timeline in months, not weeks.
Fortunately, Profar has avoided major injury. X-rays came back negative, but that didn’t rule out structural damage that an MRI would reveal. Now, we know the Braves got the best possible news. Profar will be ready for Opening Day, according to Mark Bowman.
“I’m very confident,” Profar said about being available for Opening Day. “I’m very, very confident.”
The Braves are already going to be without Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuna Jr. for a month or more, and when Sean Murphy went down, fans felt a bit of PTSD. Thankfully, Jurickson Profar avoided anything too serious; in fact, the newest Braves outfielder thinks he could play today if he needed to.
“If this happened during the season, I probably could have kept playing through it,” Profar said. “But we are in Spring Training, and I’m going to do whatever the doctors and trainers tell me to do.”
