The endless cycle between the Braves and Jesse Chavez continued today, as Atlanta inked the veteran to a minor-league deal after he was released by the Texas Rangers.
No matter how many times the Braves let Chavez go, he always seems to find his way back, in large part because he’s been absolutely abysmal with every other team. He posted a 9.45 ERA for the Rangers over 6.2 innings this spring and is now 41-years-old. There’s not much to suggest Chavez will provide much for Atlanta this season, except for the fact that every time he seems to put on a Braves jersey, he flips a switch.
Jesse Chavez ERA W/ Braves By Season

It does feel as if Chavez’s run with the Braves will eventually come to a screeching halt, and at that point, it might be time for him to call it a career. However, it’s hard to ignore the trend, and it’s even more difficult to ignore the gaping holes in the Atlanta bullpen. This is a group that needs more proven arms, and few have more experience than Jesse Chavez, who is hoping to pitch in his 18th MLB season.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, the Braves are going to give the veteran a look today and determine if he should be on the Opening Day roster, most likely serving as the team’s primary long reliever. It’ll be interesting to see how Alex Anthopoulos decides to move forward with AJ Smith-Shawver, Ian Anderson, and now Jesse Chavez to begin the season.
