Jesse Chavez was well on his way to a career year and possibly his first ever All-Star appearance. He posted a 1.55 ERA over 29 appearances before disaster struck on a mid-June afternoon in Detroit. Chavez took a hard line drive to the leg off the bat of Miguel Cabrera. He wasn’t able to leave the field off his own power, but the initial tests came back negative.
It was originally reported that he would avoid an IL stint altogether. Now, Jesse Chavez hasn’t pitched in nearly three months. Further tests eventually revealed a micro-fracture in that shin, which is the reason for the delayed absence. However, he was back on the mound for the Stripers tonight and pitched a scoreless inning despite surrounding a couple of hits and a walk on 24 pitches.
In rehab news for Gwinnett:
– Jesse Chavez gives up two hits and a walk but no runs in his only inning of work, 14 of 24 pitches for strikes
– Ehire Adrianza doubled in his first plate appearance

The most promising aspect of Chavez’s first rehab outing is the pitch count. He was able to toss 24 pitches, which means he’s pretty much as stretched out as he needs to be for a reliever. It shouldn’t be too long before he’s back with the major-league club.
The Braves could desperately use a healthy Jesse Chavez in the back of their bullpen. The top 5-6 guys have been incredibly reliable since the trade deadline, but the middle and long relief leave something to be desired with Collin McHugh and Dylan Lee hitting the IL. Hopefully, Chavez can look like the guy that he was for the Braves in the first half of the season.
