Mother Nature picked a bad time to send a hurricane through the heart of Georgia. The rain began coming down early afternoon on Wednesday and is expected to pound Atlanta for the next several days. The hope was that the Braves could possibly get in today’s game before the hard stuff arrived, but it’s here and it’s not going anywhere, which has led to Major League Baseball postponing the remainder of the Braves and Mets series.

This is a disaster for a number of reasons, and it’s something Major League Baseball should have tried to avoid. The potential for this kind of weather has been known for a long time. Now, per Joel Sherman, the Braves and Mets will be playing a doubleheader next Monday to decide who goes to the postseason.

The winner will obviously be elated, but then they’ll have to turn around and begin a Wild Card series after depleting their entire pitching staff. Sherman also notes the games will only be played if they matter in regards to the postseason, but there is almost no scenario where they don’t.
