According to Chris Cotillo, Braves fan favorite Tyler Matzek has found a new home, agreeing to a minor league deal with the New York Yankees.
The 34-year-old veteran overcame the yips, spending years away from the MLB before returning in 2020 and becoming star for Atlanta during the World Series run.
In 2021, Matzek posted a 2.57 ERA and 11.0 K/9 in 69 appearances before going nutty in the postseason. He accrued a 1.48 ERA over 24.1 playoff innings for the Braves and delivered one of the most memorable moments in franchise history in Game 6 of the NLCS.
It seemed he left everything he had on the field because in 2022, Matzek dealt with multiple injuries. It began with shoulder inflammation, and his season ended with Tommy John surgery, which kept him out for the entire 2023 campaign as well.
Matzek tried to make it back in 2024 with the Braves, but he didn’t have any juice, giving up 11 runs in 11 appearances before he was shelved with left elbow inflammation. His fastball clocked in several ticks slower, and he was eventually traded to the Giants.
Hopefully, Tyler Matzek finds some success with the Yankees and former Braves starter Max Fried.
