Braves fall out of playoff spot for first time since June of 2022

MLB: MAY 27 Nationals at Braves

If this isn’t rock bottom for the Braves in 2024, I’m afraid to see what happens next. With fewer than 50 games remaining in the season, Atlanta dropped their fifth straight game yesterday afternoon, as they were clobbered by the Brewers 16-7. Just a week ago, we were discussing chasing down the Phillies in the NL East; now, the conversation has shifted to whether Atlanta will be a part of the postseason at all.

As of today, the Braves would not be. With a win yesterday over the Rockies, the Mets now own the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League, which means the Braves are on the outside looking in for a postseason spot for the first time since June of 2022.

The good news is the Braves went on to win over 100 games and the NL East last year, but this certainly doesn’t feel like 2022. We are nearly 120 games into the 2024 campaign, and Atlanta has boasted the worst offense in baseball for over three months. This isn’t just a bad stretch anymore for a lineup that set record after record a year ago.

This is a piss-poor offense filled with automatic outs. The Braves aren’t one Michael Harris away from turning things around. They’ve been a well below .500 baseball team since the end of April. The only reason Atlanta has been able to stay afloat is because of a pitching staff that has been outstanding to this point, but regression in that aspect was always expected to some degree, especially with so many different arms dealing with issues.

Over the last several years, the Braves have seemingly been able to flip a switch when it’s go-time, but that hasn’t happened this season. They’ve tried, even hosting a player’s only meeting, and nothing has changed. In fact, it’s only gotten worse. The flip has been switched, but the Braves seem to have lost all of their power.
