There wasn’t much that went right for the Braves this afternoon against the Orioles. However, the newly acquired Drew Smyly did impress in his Atlanta debut, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out three. Those are the kind of performances that really matter during spring training, as the southpaw is fixed to be a key cog in Atlanta’s rotation to begin the year.
Outside of him, though, the Braves arms struggled. Victor Vodnik was the only other pitcher to record a scoreless inning. Luke Jackson, Carl Edwards Jr., and Tucker Davidson each gave up a run apiece in their respective frames, and Patrick Weigel surrendered four in the final inning. However, only one of them was earned.
Atlanta’s defense was also egregious as they committed three errors, and their bats weren’t much better either. Ozzie Albies provided the only spark with a solo shot in the fourth inning — one of just three hits for the Braves on the day. Cristian Pache and Phillip Irvin had the others as Baltimore waltzed to an 8-1 win.
The Braves spring training slate continues tomorrow, with Bryse Wilson scheduled to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
