The Braves have been linked to a potential blockbuster free agent in Tanner Scott. Unfortunately, they have a lot of competition.
The Yankees were connected to the high-profile reliever, but following the Devin Williams trade, I’d be shocked if New York forked over the money for Scott. That isn’t the case with the Dodgers, though. LA has also been linked to Scott, and another deep-pocketed club was as well.
The Mets are looking to add a reliever, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic, with Scott mentioned as one specific name they have interest in. The Braves division rival, along with those pesky Dodgers, will be able to afford whoever they set their eyes on.
For a guy who has thrown 150 innings with a 2.04 ERA over the last two seasons, it isn’t expected to be cheap. MLB Trade Rumors predicted Tanner Scott will land a four-year deal worth $56 million, but with the way the market has exploded, nobody should surprised if he far exceeds that figure.
In fact, there are murmurs of a record-breaking deal. Sean McAdam of MassLive indicated that Scott could receive $20 million per year on a new contract. In terms of present net value, that would set a new record for a reliever.
I find it hard to believe that the Braves would go that far. In that same breath, do we really expect Steve Cohen to pay Scott and Edwin Diaz a combined $40 million per year? Even if money is no object to the Mets, that’s a lot of coin for two players that will only combine to pitch around 120-130 innings.
Suffice to say, there’s real interest in Tanner Scott from the heaviest hitters in baseball, so we’ll find out how much Alex Anthopoulos really wants the hard-throwing southpaw very soon.
