Braves: Chris Sale is one step closer to his first Cy Young Award

MLB: SEP 03 Rockies at Braves

Unlike last year’s Braves team, there won’t be as many award celebrations, but there will be one — Chris Sale winning his first Cy Young.

Sale was named a finalist for the National League Cy Young Award on Monday. This isn’t a surprise, and the overwhelming expectation is that the wily veteran will indeed win the award for the very first time.

While the winner won’t be announced until November 20, the celebration and praise have already begun because there’s virtually no way he won’t win it. In fact, there has never been a Triple Crown winner who hasn’t won the award.

Sale earned Triple Crown honors by leading the National League with 18 wins, a 2.38 ERA and 225 strikeouts. In a week and a half, he’ll be the Braves’ first Cy Young since Tom Glavine won it in 1998.

Sale just won a Gold Glove Award too, capping off one of the best trades in franchise history. Last offseason, Atlanta shipped Vaughn Grissom to Boston in exchange for Sale. The Red Sox even footed the bill for Chris Sale’s magical season.

The only negative thing I have to say about the entire situation is that the fans didn’t get to see Sale in a postseason game. The Braves clinched their seventh consecutive playoff berth, but their ace succumbed to back spasms in the final week of the season.

Hopefully, the Braves will make their eighth straight trip to the playoffs in 2025, but Chris Sale will be there to toe the rubber in Game 1.

Congratulations to Chris Sale!
