In the middle of last season, Charlie Morton‘s future with the organization was up in the air. He wasn’t performing up to his standards, and he had a club option coming up in the winter. Many expected the Braves to move on, but not only did they decide to keep him, they handed him a one year extension with another $20 million club option for 2024.
For a 39-year-old coming off one of his worst seasons in recent memory, it was an incredible sign of faith in the veteran, but the early returns have been fantastic. Charlie Morton owns a 2.85 ERA over his first eight starts, and beyond the numbers, it doesn’t appear that he’s lost anything. His fastball has touched 98 at times, and his patented Uncle Charlie looked as unhittable as ever during his last outing against the Rangers.
Given how expensive pitching has proven to be in free agency, $20 million is now looking like a more than fair price for Charlie Morton, and they could have him back again at the same number in 2024.
On the latest episode of SportsTalkATL, we discuss Morton’s resurgence and how critical he is to the Braves success with Max Fried and Kyle Wright on the IL.
