The Braves stirred up some minor controversy on Father’s Day when they chose to designate Charlie Culberson for assignment, whose dad was scheduled to throw out the first pitch of the game. It was an unfortunate situation, but the Braves didn’t have a choice.
Culberson was a glorified placeholder on the roster for the time being. He had not appeared in a game, and there was really never going to be a situation where he was called upon. Culberson was only there as a veteran presence that brings great vibes, which is important, until the team actually needs something.
When Sean Murphy went down, the Braves all of a sudden had to call up a backup catcher, which they did in Chadwick Tromp, leading to the obvious decision to designate Charlie Culberson for assignment.
Despite that, there was still a chance for Charlie Clutch to stay with the organization. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t claimed, which allowed the Braves to outright him to Gwinnett. However, he elected free agency.
The Braves outrighted Charlie Culberson to Triple-A Gwinnett. He elected free agency instead.

Just like there should be no hard feelings from Culberson regarding the Braves decision to DFA him, nobody should be upset that he elected free agency instead of re-joining the Stripers. The writing is on the wall for Culberson in Atlanta. He will never get meaningful opportunities at the major-league level with the Braves. There is just too much talent ahead of him, but that doesn’t mean he can’t carve out a role elsewhere.
