Braves: Bryse Wilson named Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week

The fresh haircut seems to be working for Bryse Wilson, because on Monday the righty took home some hardware, winning Minor League Baseball’s Pitcher of the Week award for Triple-A’s East League.

The award is for last week’s performance, and for Wilson, he only made one start for Gwinnett. However, that one outing versus Durham was easily the 23-year-old’s best showing on the mound this season. Last Wednesday (June 30), Wilson made a start against the Bulls, in which he allowed just three hits across seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking only one. Surprisingly, given how solid he’s been in the minors this year, the seven frames and three hits allowed were both season-bests for Bryse and his second shutout in 2021.

The gem last week gives Wilson a 3.97 ERA in 45.1 innings overall this season with the Stripers. The righty is currently first on the team in innings-pitched and third in both strikeouts (39) and starts this year (8).

Of course, the ultimate goal is for Wilson to produce at the big league level. His last game with the Braves came on June 20 when he allowed five runs from eight hits in a four-inning start against the Cardinals. In six starts with Atlanta (28.2 IP) this season, Wilson sports a 5.34 ERA and has surrendered 2.2 homers per nine.

Regardless, the award is well-deserved for Wilson, who I feel has made some strides in 2021, especially with his command and control. I know there’s a good bit of fatigue when it comes to guys like Wilson or Kyle Wright, but I certainly believe the former of those two has a better outlook in terms of possibly catching fire in the majors. This isn’t that article, but Wilson could have some trade value and help Atlanta acquire a big league need at the deadline. Either way, congrats to Wilson who continues to work. Last week’s strong pitching paid off.
