The deadline to tender contracts to arbitration candidates is today at 8:00 PM ET. Most of the Braves‘ decisions are very straightforward. The only question was whether or not they would bring back Tyler Matzek, who will miss all of next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last month. The Braves answered that this afternoon, inking him to a two-year deal.

The deal is worth $3.1 million and comes with a $5.5 million club option for 2025. My guess is most of that $3.1 million will be paid to Matzek in 2024 when he returns, giving the Braves a little more financial flexibility for this year.
I’m thrilled this contract got hammered out. Matzek is one of my favorite Braves of all time for a number of reasons, but it was overwhelmingly evident all season that the 2021 World Series run took a toll on his arm. He was never the same this year and eventually had to undergo Tommy John right before the playoffs. In the long run, however, I believe the surgery will help him tremendously in regaining his 2021 form.
