Braves announce Saturday starter with Max Fried, Reynaldo Lopez on the mend

MLB: JUN 30 Pirates at Braves

The Braves begin a four-game set against the Marlins tonight in what has to be a series that Atlanta wins at least three with Miami sporting a literal Tripla-A lineup after the trade deadline.

The club sits 6.5 games behind the first-place Phillies in the NL East, and they could be getting their horses back for this weekend. The Braves announced Grant Holmes will start Saturday but noted Fried is eligible to come off the injured list on Friday and could pitch as early as Sunday, adding Reynaldo Lopez is day-to-day.

Holmes spent 10 years in the minor leagues before the Braves called him to the majors for the first time last month, and he made his first MLB start on Tuesday against the Brewers.

Holmes allowed one run and recorded eight strikeouts over five innings, leaving the game with a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the win because Jesse Chavez ended up giving up a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning. However, with Lopez on the mend, Brian Snitker is going back to the well.

As far as Fried, Alex Anthopoulos spoke earlier this week about his timeline. He threw and felt good after a bullpen session. Obviously, getting their ace back is a significant deal for the Braves.

Lopez may have to take a short stint on the IL, but the Braves can backdate it, and he would only spend a small amount of time on it.

Tonight, the Braves will trot Charlie Morton out after the veteran got smacked around by the Mets last week on Friday. Morton only went 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs, six of them earned.

Hopefully, for the club and Morton’s sake, he’s got better stuff tonight against a poor Marlins lineup.
