The Braves’ incredible pitching depth has been one of the key reasons why this team has been the best in baseball despite dealing with a plethora of injuries. However, some concerns have come to light in recent weeks about the back end of the bullpen. The Braves have some decisions to make, but it looks like several reinforcements could be on their way.
Most notably, Jesse Chavez has been added to the major-league roster. In a corresponding move, Lucas Luetge has been designated for assignment. Chavez last pitched for the Braves on June 14th, when he was struck in the leg with a line drive off the bat of Miguel Cabrera. The initial X-rays were negative, which prompted many to believe he would avoid an IL stint altogether. However, it was later revealed Chavez suffered a micro-fracture in his shin, which has caused him to miss several months. Prior to the injury, he was having a career year at 40 years old, and the hope is he can re-establish himself as a critical piece to the Braves bullpen.
However, Chavez isn’t the only reliever that could return before the postseason. The Braves also announced that Collin McHugh, Daysbel Hernandez, and Nick Anderson will also be beginning their rehab assignments on the farm.

This is a massive development. Nick Anderson has also been out since before the All-Star break but was a go-to option for Brian Snitker late in games during the first half of the season. Getting him back healthy would be a huge addition right before the postseason.
Collin McHugh is a name to keep an eye on as well. He has not looked like the same pitcher this season that pitched for the Braves in 2022, but he does have a stellar track record and loads of postseason experience. He could also be an option for the team depending on how he looks over the next couple of weeks.
There isn’t much time to figure it out, but the Braves don’t necessarily need all three of these guys to work out. Getting just one or two of them right and ready for October baseball would be fantastic for their hopes of winning the World Series.
