The Braves series opener in Milwaukee didn’t go quite like anybody might have hoped, but today was a win for the baseball team in Atlanta.

It started with a bit of news before the game, when Brian Snitker announced Reynaldo Lopez’s MRI came back clean. The first time All-Star that leads all of the majors in ERA may even be able to make his next start and likely will not need to go on the IL. That’s massive, and after the game, the Braves swung their first trade.

Are we sure it’s not 2021? The last time the Braves lost Ronald Acuña Jr. to a season-ending injury, they acquired four outfielders, including Jorge Soler. Soler went on to help the Braves to their first World Series since 1995 on his way to MVP honors, in large part thanks to this shot in the series-clinching Game 6.

With Acuña out for the season again this year, the Braves are going back to the well. According to Robert Murray, Atlanta has acquired Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson from the Giants.

Soler isn’t having the best of seasons after signing a three-year, $42 million contract with the Giants, hitting .240 with 12 homers and a .749 OPS. However, that’s still a significant upgrade over what the Braves are currently trotting out each night, and Lord knows, he sure seems to love playing in Atlanta.

Beyond just what Soler will bring to the team this year, he’s also under contract at a rather palatable figure of $16 million in 2025 and 2026. So, the Braves pick up the reinforcements they desperately needed for this season and some help for the following two years as well.

We will see what happens with Luke Jackson. He’s amid a poor season, boasting a 5.40 ERA over 36 appearances, and the Braves have a very crowded bullpen. I’m not sure he’s really apart of the team’s plans, but he likely was included so the Braves could pay off the remainder of his contract, as he’s owed $6 million next season with a $2 million buyout for 2026.

Because the Braves were willing to take on all of that money, they didn’t have to send much of anything to the Giants in terms of prospects.

Tyler Matzek goes to San Francisco in the deal, which is certainly bittersweet, but he’s never been the same since that 2021 World Series run and did not have a place on the current roster. Sabin Cabellos was a third-round pick in the 2023 draft. In 84 games with High-A Rome, he’s hitting .259 with three homers and a .707. OPS.

In a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster, Darius Vines was designated for assignment.
