Cristian Pache was one of the main pieces in Atlanta’s trade for Matt Olson this offseason. While it was difficult to part with such a vaunted prospect and incredible guy, Pache has had a tough time in Oakland.

Playing as the Athletics’ everyday centerfielder this season, Pache has slashed a sparse .162/.199/.238 with two homers. Part of that is some unfavorable luck — the 23-year-old has an unsightly .202 BABIP. However, a whiff% and chase rate that are both in the bottom 26% of the league aren’t helping either.
It’s not looking particularly promising for Pache, but let’s remember how young he is. I still think he can develop into a premier centerfielder with a little more pop in his bat. One helpful aspect is that the defense and speed are already making an impact. Pache is one of the best defenders in baseball, shown by his top 2% outs above average.

Even though his offense won’t blow anyone away, Oakland is the perfect spot for Pache to figure it out at the plate. I’m rooting hard for him — he’s one of the nicest guys in baseball, and a heck of a ballplayer too.
