The Braves pitching extends further than just the majors. All of their top prospects have been excellent through the first two months of the season. Unfortunately, Owen Murphy and AJ Smith-Shawver recently suffered injuries. Murphy is out for the season with a torn UCL, and Smith-Shawver will miss a couple of months with an oblique strain, but we did get to see Spencer Schwellenbach make his MLB debut earlier this week.
The 23-year-old put together a more than respectable outing, allowing three runs over five innings with five strikeouts and showing off an impressive five-pitch mix. As of now, it looks like he’ll remain with the big-league club, and we could see another Braves top prospect make his MLB debut, 2023 first-round pick Hurston Waldrep.
The former Florida Gators standout on the mound has strung together several fantastic outings and was promoted to Gwinnett today.
Happy Triple-A promotion day to @HurstonWaldrep!
Waldrep finished May with a 1.19 ERA over five starts, 31 strikeouts to seven walks.

Hurston Waldrep’s 2024 campaign got off to a rough start, allowing ten earned runs over his first two outings. But in seven starts since, he’s allowed just six runs.
Waldrep might be the best arm in the Braves organization right now among prospects, and it appears to all be coming together for him. He’s struck out 23 batters over his last three starts, and perhaps more notably, he’s only walked three batters. With his stuff, it won’t be long before he’s in Atlanta if he can continue to limit the free passes.
