The Falcons have a busy offseason ahead of them following the hire of Raheem Morris.
Atlanta’s new head coach has already made a difference for the club, bringing Zac Robinson with him from Los Angeles as the offensive coordinator for the Falcons.
Now, Terry Fontenot and Morris will have to plan to build a roster that can finally end the team’s postseason drought; that is the entire goal. It starts with the quarterback position, but there are plenty of other holes that need to be filled.
The Falcons still need a dominant pass rusher, another wide receiver to pair with Drake London, and a cornerback to pair with A.J. Terrell. Looking down the road, bolstering the line of scrimmage on both sides is never a bad thing either.
Overall, the roster is in good shape but needs tweaking. What isn’t up for debate is the Falcons need for a quarterback.
Armed with plenty of cap space and an arsenal of draft picks, the world is at Fontenot’s fingertips. That means trades are certainly on the table — both in the draft and on the pro personnel side of things.
Bleacher Report recently did an offseason trade guide for every team, and the Falcons’Â top three trade targets will have fans salivating.
Top Trade Targets: QB Justin Fields, EDGE Khalil Mack, Top-Three Draft Pick
Regardless of who becomes Atlanta’s next coach, the team needs to settle the quarterback position. If the Chicago Bears are willing to move off of Justin Fields—they hold the No. 1 pick and could go with a rookie QB instead—Fields would be an enticing target for Atlanta.
Fields’ dual-threat ability would make him dangerous in an Atlanta offense loaded with playmakers at the skill positions. Alternatively, the Falcons could trade up to the top of the draft for a premier QB prospect like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
Defensively, the Falcons could desperately use a high-end pass-rusher. Calais Campbell and Bud Dupree both led the team with 6.5 sacks apiece and both are impending free agents.
Given the Chargers’ cap situation, Atlanta should consider a play for Khalil Mack.
I’m not sure if the order is important, but if it is, this should be flipped around. Securing a top three draft pick to guarantee a shot at one of the top three quarterback prospects should be the Falcons’ top priority this offseason.
Assuming Caleb Williams goes to the Bears, Drake Maye goes to the Commanders, and the Patriots take Jayden Daniels with the first three picks, the Falcons would then be in a position to trade for Justin Fields. However, they should do everything in their power to land one of Williams, Maye, or Daniels if possible.
The Falcons also acquiring a high end pass rusher like Khalil Mack is interesting. He’s getting up there in age and is expensive, but Mack is still sacking quarterbacks at an elite rate. The Falcons could do much worse.
