Publicly, the Falcons have been the only team connected to Bill Belichick.
Media pundits speculated that the Eagles and Cowboys would be interested in the former Patriots head coach, but it was nothing more than conjecture. Most recently, Jerry Jones confirmed that Mike McCarthy would return to Dallas in 2024.
Though the jury is still out on Nick Siranni, the Eagles head coach will meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Friday for an exit interview. It seems there’s a faint possibility that he is let go and then Philadelphia pivots to Belichick, but that seems unlikely at this point.
The Falcons seem to have been the only team to show interest in Bill Belichick; they’re certainly the only team to interview the coach many consider to be the greatest of all time, and he’s set to interview for the second time this weekend.
It’s worth wondering — Why are the Falcons the only team to pursue eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick?
Well, it may be that Belichick has only shown interest in the Falcons, not the other way around. According to Mike Florio, there’s “belief in some league circles” that the Eagles and Cowboys expressed interest in Belichick, that he “didn’t reciprocate,” forcing Dallas and Philadelphia to stick with their current coaches.
It may be that Belichick would be given more autonomy in Atlanta compared to the NFC East clubs. Arthur Blank is turning 82-years-old and is growing desparate. He may be willing to give Belichick whatever he wants to lure him to the Falcons. Another factor might be the pressure in Dallas and Philadelphia compared to Atlanta, Florio added.
“As one league source explained it, Belichick is believed to be done with “big-market media,” making him more inclined to go to a place like Atlanta than Dallas or Philadelphia.”
It’s certainly a new wrinkle in Bill Belichick’s coaching free agency. Other than this sentiment from Florio, which is just a belief around league circles, it’s been only the Falcons showing interest in him.
