The sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been announced, and Atlanta will be at the center of things as the event heads to the United States for the first time since 1994. Mercedes Benz Stadium — home to both the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United — will host eight matches in the tournament, including a semifinal.

The final will be hosted in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, which is a bit surprising. I didn’t expect Atlanta to get the nod over some of the other potential venues, but MetLife is one of the least desirable options they could have gone with. New Jersey isn’t exactly a glowing representation of some of the incredible cities the United States has to offer, and there are far better stadiums, like So-Fi, Mercedes Benz, and AT&T. However, all three of those venues will be featured in the knockout rounds.
The World Cup returning to the States will be an incredible moment for the country, and Atlanta will be buzzing in a couple of summers. It is by far the largest sporting event in the world taking place every four years, averaging 1.5 billion viewers across the globe in 2022.

2022 World Cup Final attendance: 88,966Super Bowl LVII viewership: Approximately 200 million (60% of all people in the US), according to the NFL

For all of his faults when it comes to running the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Blank has been a tremendous ambassador for the city. His role in bringing a new stadium to Atlanta has helped attract some of the best sporting events in the world. Mercedes Benz Stadium has hosted a Super Bowl, Final Four, College Football Playoff games, and now they are set to host the World Cup in just a couple of years.
