The NFL trade deadline is a few days away, and nothing that happens on Sunday against the Cowboys can convince me the Falcons are fine coming away empty-handed.
Thankfully, the club is expected to be in the market for a pass rusher. “Yes,” Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated responded to a question that the Falcons are indeed in the trade market for a pass rusher. “They like what they’ve gotten in Matthew Judon. They’re very open to adding to what he’s brought to the table.”
Breer isn’t the only insider hearing that Terry Fontenot is scouring the market for a pass rusher. Fellow NFL insider James Palmer echoed similar sentiments.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Atlanta lands an edge. They are in the market looking for another piece because they know where they’re at right now. Keep an eye on them still looking at edge rushers. They already made one move right before the start of the season,” Palmer said.
The Bleacher Report pundit brought up the Matthew Judon trade; it’s been an unmitigated disaster. Through eight games, Judon has logged 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits. That’s not what the Falcons thought they were getting when they sent the Patriots a third-round pick.
Given their standing in the NFC South and lack of a pass rush, there’s no reason not to make another addition. Draft picks are valuable, but Terry Fontenot has shown no ability to consistently draft successfully outside of the first round.
There’s no reason to hoard draft picks either. The Falcons have their quarterback of the future sitting behind their quarterback of the present. The acquisition of a franchise signal caller is usually the most difficult thing to do for an organization, but the Falcons believe they already have theirs, so they might as well start building up the roster in other areas. Draft picks be damned.
