Another Braves pitcher to begin road back from injury

Even without Spencer Strider, this Braves rotation might be the best of my lifetime.

The unit is headlined by its three All-Stars in Max Fried, Chris Sale, and Reynaldo Lopez. That trio can go toe-to-toe with any 1-2-3 in baseball, and they’re joined by a slew of other exciting arms.

Charlie Morton is the veteran at the back end of the rotation, and he may be bumped down by Spencer Schwellenbach at the end of the season if the rookie continues to improve. Behind them, Ian Anderson and AJ Smith-Shawver are making their way back from injury, and they’re joined by Huascar Ynoa.

The former Braves standout was sent to their Florida Complex League affiliate Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment.

Some years ago, Ynoa was a player that had many Braves fans thinking he was going to be a staple at the top of Atlanta’s rotation for years to come. He was pitching at an All-Star level before a terrible outing against the Brewers prompted an outburst that resulted in a broken hand. He missed significant time but would never be the same.

Ynoa struggled to end that 2021 campaign, which continued in 2022 before he was eventually demoted to Gwinnett. Later, he would undergo Tommy John surgery, and he didn’t return until April of this year.

In that first outing, he threw 4.0 innings of no run ball with two hits, two strikeouts, and one walk. The second outing wasn’t nearly as clean, failing to make it out of the second inning and surrendering six earned runs. Ynoa’s third start was much closer to that of the first, tossing 4.0 innings and surrendering only one run via a home run.

Unfortunately, he was shut down with right elbow stress following that start. This will be Ynoa’s first appearance since then. Braves fans should temper expectations because his velocity has been down since returning.
