The Falcons made the decision to hire Raheem Morris after passing over him three years ago in favor of Arthur Smith.
The former Falcons passing game and defensive coordinator has plenty of experience on both sides of the ball, coached on the same staff as Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, will lure free agents to Atlanta and is deserving of another opportunity to be a head coach.
With that being said, it doesn’t matter if it was Raheem Morris, Bill Belichick or any other candidate the Falcons hired, I’d argue the bigger task is finding a quarterback.
It ultimately cost Arthur Smith his job. In reality, the former Falcons head coach never got a fair shake. He dealt with below average quarterback play during his tenure in Atlanta; nobody could’ve succeeded with Desmond Ridder.
Granted, Smith acted as if Ridder was the second coming of Jesus Christ himself, so he certainly deserves to shoulder that blame, but let’s not beat around the bush, the Falcons finding an answer at the position is the priority this offseason, not another half measure.
So, what will Raheem Morris do at quarterback?
Unlike Bill Belichick, where the Falcons options would’ve been limited, Morris’ options are vast. It was assumed that a veteran signal caller would’ve been the direction Belichick went this offseason if he was awarded the job.
The Falcons can still bring in a veteran through free agency if they believe that to be the best course of action, but they can also take a quarterback in the draft or trade for someone like Justin Fields.
Given Raheem Morris’ background on both sides of the ball, his opinion should be considered, but I’d like Terry Fontenot’s opinion to carry the most weight. The Falcons GM has done nothing but do good things in the front office, and he deserves the opportunity to make this decision for the franchise.
Whether it’s someone like Jayden Daniels at the 8th pick or in a trade, J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix on Day 2, a free agent like Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield, or taking a flier on someone like Justin Fields, the Falcons will have every option at their disposal.
