Adam Schefter doesn’t believe Bill Belichick is the favorite for Falcons job

NFL: JUL 30 New England Patriots Training Camp

In the latest turn of the saga that is the Atlanta Falcons head coaching search, ESPN insider Adam Schefter was on Get Up this morning and said it certainly doesn’t seem like Bill Belichick is the favorite to become the next head coach in Atlanta.

On the surface, this would seem to be the case. If the Falcons were 100% on Bill Belichick, wouldn’t they just get it over with and name him the next head coach? As of yesterday, they’ve satisfied the Rooney Rule and are free to hire whichever coach they please without any penalties.

Instead, the Falcons coaching search has only expanded since their second interview with Bill Belichick. Jim Harbaugh inked a deal with the Chargers yesterday, but Arthur Blank still met with former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel for the first time. They also have a slew of second interviews lined up with high quality candidates like Mike Macdonald, Bobby Slowik, Ben Johnson, and Anthony Weaver.

Whether that’s simply the Falcons doing their due diligence on all the potential candidates or them truly moving off of Belichick remains to be seen. However, what we do know is an internal power struggle is likely playing a factor in the decision.

Arthur Blank has had his sights set on Belichick from the jump, but that would likely mean firing his good buddy Rich McKay or at least forcing him out of his current position, and it could also spell bad news for Terry Fontenot. As of right now, those guys are still involved in the hiring decision, so if it is a collaborative effort, one would think the Falcons end up going in a different direction away from Belichick.

Since the beginning, the Falcons head coaching search has been a soap opera, and there appears to be no end in sight.
