A second head coaching candidate is off the board for Falcons

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 21 Michigan at Michigan State

Earlier this week, the Titans wasted no time naming Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to be their next head coach. Callahan had interviewed once with the Falcons and was scheduled to meet with them again, but the Titans didn’t want to take any chances. They found their guy and didn’t let him leave the building.

Now, another top candidate for the Falcons head coaching vacancy is off the board, and this one stings a lot more than Brian Callahan. According to Adam Schefter, Jim Harbaugh has been named the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Falcons were the only other NFL team Jim Harbaugh interviewed with. Of course, Michigan appeared to still be in the mix, but I’m not really sure anybody had a chance of winning out over the Chargers. Harbaugh played for the Chargers, has family in the area, Los Angeles is a wonderful place to live, and Justin Herbert is one of the top quarterbacks in the game. As long as he’s under center, Jim Harbaugh will have a chance to be competitive. Herbert is by far the best quarterback Harbaugh has had the opportunity to work with over his career.

It may only be two candidates now off the table for the Falcons, but with Harbaugh going to the Chargers, the options really appear to be narrowing down. The Falcons did meet with Mike Vrabel for the first time today, and obviously, Bill Belichick is still in the play. However, if Arthur Blank is dead set on hiring a coach with significant experience, those are really the only two options, and who knows how interested Vrabel is in the job after the Falcons just fired Arthur Smith.

There are plenty of hot candidates without head coaching experience remaining. Several of which the Falcons plan to interview a second time, but it will probably take one of them blowing Arthur Blank out of the water for him to take his sights off Bill Belichick.
