While the Falcons licked their wounds over the bye week, the fans had plenty to watch around the league.
The Buccaneers dominated the Giants and pulled within one game of the division-leading Falcons, and an old friend got on the field in the wake of a Gardner Minshew injury.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Minshew suffered a broken collarbone in the loss to the Broncos and will miss the rest of the season, making way for Desmond Ridder to start.
His first appearance as a member of the Raiders came in relief of Minshew against the Bengals, completing 11-of-16 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He completed 5-of-10 passes for 64 yards on Sunday afternoon against Denver but was sacked and fumbled the game away, something Falcons fans are all too familiar with.
Now, unless the Raiders acquire a starter, the Falcons will face Ridder on Monday Night Football in a few weeks. Of course, a lot can change from now until then.
Las Vegas would be waiving the white flag on the season if they choose to roll with Ridder the rest of the way, especially with a starter in Daniel Jones available. The Falcons MNF contest with the Raiders is also in a flex spot that can be moved, which seems likely at this point.
However, if both of those trends continue, the Falcons will face their former starter, Desmond Ridder, in front of the entire NFL world. The first thought would be: Atlanta will dominate Ridder; he sucks!
Well, this is the Atlanta Falcons, where it’s better to live by Murphy’s Law — what can go wrong, will go wrong. This defense is awful, and stranger things have happened. It would be completely on-brand if the Falcons pissed down their leg against Desmond Ridder on Monday Night Football.
It would be fans’ worst fears coming true.
