The Braves just won the dadgum World Series, and here I am talking about 2022! No, I’m not trying to fast-forward time, rather I’m already preparing for a repeat from the boys of summer. Today’s piece will take a look at the Braves guaranteed dollars on tap for 2022 by looking at free agents. Tomorrow, I’ll discuss the arbitration eligible players, and after that, I’ll go through the pre-arb players. Finally, the 4th part in the segment will tie all four pieces together and analyze holes to fill in the roster. Let’s GO!
Braves Guaranteed Contracts for 2022
- Charlie Morton: $20MM
- *Marcell Ozuna: $16MM
- Ronald Acuña Jr.: $15MM
- Will Smith: $13MM
- Travis d’Arnaud: $8MM
- Ozzie Albies: $5MM
Breakdown: There’s $77 million committed to six players, but that sum could very well turn into $61MM should MLB follow the trend of suspending players guilty of Domestic Violence for a full year without pay. The baseline for this argument is Sam Dyson‘s suspension. Below is an excerpt from USA Today’s article on Dyson:
In an October 2020 report, The Athletic reviewed text messages, photos, medical and public documents provided by Blackburn, which painted a pattern of verbal and emotional abuse, along with photos of Blackburn’s bruised arms, which were provided to Jupiter police. Dyson did not face charges in Jupiter, with Blackburn saying the police believed they could not provide probable cause.
Considering the evidence for Ozuna might be more damning, we could very well see Ozuna sit out the entire 2022 season. Time will tell.
Conclusion: Tomorrow, we will discuss the Braves arbitration eligible cases, and due to the rebuild in which the Braves stocked up on big league talent to create an elite farm system, there’s some bottlenecking here that could prove problematic.
