Matt Bosher has been hobbled and ineffective, and now his 2019 is officially over. Matt Wile has filled in some for Bosher, but I think the Falcons should turn to a guy who was the best at his position over the past few years.
Known for his dancing, tweets, and on the field antics, Marquette King has a big smile and colorful personality. He can also absolutely tank a football off of his right foot. The Macon native is still a free agent after signing a 3 year, $7 million deal with Denver last offseason. So what happened?
King had a thigh injury, and Denver reached an injury settlement with him after only 4 games. He hasn’t been on a roster since. However, Marquette seems fine as he posted a video of him kicking on his Twitter last month. The former UDFA of the Oakland Raiders led the league in yards per punt in 2012, punting yards in 2014 and was named 2nd team All Pro in 2016. As interesting as punting stats are, King legitimately seems like a good guy and he’s one of the top options available at the moment right now. He’s a Georgia native, and probably would come at a decent price at this point in the season. He’s only 30 years old and could be a real long term solution if the team decides he’s a better option than Matt Bosher.
King is far from a guarantee, but it’s irresponsible to keep trotting Bosher out there after 2019 if his leg is bad. He’s already not doing kickoffs, and his 3 punts went an average of 36 yards. 2 of those 3 times, the Falcons were inside their own 15. Bosher is on the IR and we don’t have a choice anymore. Pick up the phone, call King.
