This is the first time since Terry Fontenot took over in Atlanta that the Falcons won’t be drafting in the top 10, but it might not be the worst thing in the world.

According to Albert Breer, teams in that top 10 are going to have trouble trading down. Why? There aren’t a lot of clear-cut stars in this draft class.

One thing that's real obvious—Gonna be very difficult to trade down for teams in the Top 10 this year. Lots of teams in that range would like to. But with a class where the difference between 5 and 15 or even 4 and 20 is negligible, tough to see what teams would come up for.

That’s phenomenal news for the Falcons, especially considering they only own five picks in the draft. If the Falcons can move down from the 15th pick and acquire more draft capital while the caliber of prospect remains the same, that would be a huge win for Terry Fontenot.

This report from Albert Breer comes after general managers and head coaches told Daniel Jeremiah that this cycle has been described as a “starter” draft.

“I’ve talked to several GM’s and HC’s over the last week & everyone seems to agree– this draft is a starter draft. Maybe not a ton of star power but your goal should be to come away with 3-4 solid starters. They are out there. Go find them,” DJ tweeted.

The Falcons picking up a third-round pick by trading down in the first round could net them another starter, something they desperately need. While it’s always nice to be picking at the beginning of each round, this might not be the worst draft to be picking in the middle of each round.

The Falcons may have lucked into this one.
