Mike Bobo deserves a lot of credit for Jared Curtis commitment

The Georgia Bulldogs received some massive offseason news earlier in the week, when it was announced that top quarterback recruit Jared Curtis is heading to Athens.

Curtis had originally committed to Georgia a little over a year ago but decommitted to further evaluate his options. In the end, it came down to the Bulldogs and Oregon Ducks, with Georgia winning out in large part because of offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who many fans wanted to run out of town after a disappointing end to the 2024 season in the Sugar Bowl.

“Just talking to coach Bobo, I’ve been up there so many times and built a relationship with all of the coaches,” Curtis said when asked what led to his decision to commit to the Bulldogs. “But getting up there with coach Bobo and him coming down to us, that made an impression, and just getting to talk to him was really good in general.”

“… Coach Bobo, he’s been doing it a long time, and he’s told me he doesn’t have any desire to stop now, so I feel like he knows a lot about the game, and he’ll get me to where I want to be.”

Georgia’s offense undoubtedly underwhelmed this past season after coming into the year with such high expectations. Carson Beck was a frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy, but he regressed in his second year as the Bulldogs starting quarterback. But even more surprisingly, Georgia was unable to consistently find success on the ground, an area where they had been dominant for such a long time, including under Bobo in 2023.

The Bulldogs averaged over 40 points per game and nearly 200 rushing yards per game in Mike Bobo’s return to Athens. However, they averaged just 31.6 points per game and only 127.6 rushing yards per contest this past season, a drop-off nobody saw coming.

How much Mike Bobo played in that regression is up for debate. The offensive line was not nearly as dominant as years past, and Georgia’s wide receivers couldn’t help but drop wide-open passes, leading the nation with 36 drops. The Bulldogs also clearly felt the effects of losing stars like Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey to the NFL, who went on to dominate as rookies.

Ultimately, Kirby Smart decided to stick with what he knows for now, and it paid off in the recruitment of Jared Curtis. But if Mike Bobo wants to be the one that coaches the highly touted quarterback, he’ll need to fix the issues that plagued the Georgia Bulldogs offense this past season.
