The Atlanta Braves had their Spring Breakout game yesterday against the Detroit Tigers, pinning each organization’s top young prospects against each other. Atlanta didn’t win the game, but one of their youngest prospects introduced himself in a loud way with his performance.
19-year-old Didier Fuentes was a late addition to the roster, but he turned heads with his high-90s fastball and impressive secondary offerings, striking out seven batters and allowing just one baserunner over three innings of work.
Fuentes was signed out of Colombia in 2022 and really burst onto the scene last year for the August Green Jackets, posting a 2.74 ERA over 75.2 innings with 90 strikeouts compared to just 21 walks. He’s already got a huge arm, and it could get even stronger over the next couple of years as he continues to fill out his six-foot frame.
Currently, Fuentes is the Braves 12th ranked prospect, according to MLB.com, but that might be a little low for a guy with so much upside. 2025 is a massive year for his development. He’ll likely begin the year in High-A Rome, and it’s possible he finds himself in AA before season’s end. Given his talent and the Braves consistent willingness to push their prospects up the ranks quickly, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that Didier Fuentes makes his MLB debut in the next couple of years.
